Feedback on rough cut

Camerawork

Really like different shots, close up of guitars.
good angle of guitar picking
different shots of the guitarist, singer and drummer keep things varied
different angles, variety is good
good, some more shots would be good.

Editing

Different shots are in tune works really well when with the music
needs better lip syncing but really like the flow of different shots.
Great idea showing quick bits of footage of the different guitars
cut and put together well- flows well.
lip syncing needs to be done at beginning
good so far
some different shots + different organization
black and white footage of mistakes shows playful side of song
like the black and white shot fading into the next shot.

Mise en scene

really good lighting- well planned (time of day) costumes could have been chosen better
liked the idea of using buckets + boxes for bins

Performance/ Genre

Genre fitted well - upbeat, happy
good performance

Overall comments

Cut a ways really good
like it
good idea like it

Target audience for our music video

We have been researching 'The Shivers', and on other websites, trying to figure out the perfect target audience. We have mainly been looking at their mypsace music page, trying to find the average age of the existing fans of 'The Shivers'.

We found out that most of the fans of 'The Shivers', are male and roughly aged between 16/17 - 25.
We decided this would be good to use this as our target audience, because it isn't too specific, and we can make our video appropriate for this age group.

Ideas for our footage 'making of'

We noticed, while we were filming our main shoot, we had gathered a large amount of unwanted footage of us talking and discussing various parts of the music video. We thought that it would be a great idea to collect the best bits of this footage together to incorporate it into our music video, as part of the 'shenanigans' section or just a 'making of' part of it. Here is and example of a video which uses this idea of the 'making of.

I can't dance - Genesis

Another part of the idea, is that we should make the 'making of' footage in black and white or saturate the colours to make the music and singing seperate from the discussing and talking. This is so that anybody viewing the music video won't be confused as to which part is the singing and which part isn't.

Use of costumes and props

Costumes:
For our performance we tried to mimic the actual clothes that the band wore during their performances, which includes, casual checkered shirts, jeans and trainers.

Props: We used Dave and Steve's guitars, the electric guitar, acoustic guitar and the bass. We created a drum kit using buckets and crates. For the drumsticks we used wooden spoons.

Response to blog investigation

The feedback we received overall was very positive and cemented what we already knew. Our next plan of action will be to begin to edit our performance footage into a form of music video leaving room for our cut-away sequences. We will also plan what we want to film for our cut-away scenes, seeing as we only really have 2 ideas as of yet, these being a pool table part, finding the band members as mentioned before and a form of tribute to scooby-doo.

Mise en scene - Costumes - they have not stated that that is what they will be wearing.

Good amount of other music video analysis shot list

mise en scene - more detail

2. IS THERE EVIDENCE IN THE BLOG THAT THE GROUP HAS:

- COMPLETED BACKGROUND RESEARCH?
- ORGANISED PERSONNEL, LOCATION AND EQUIPMENT FOR SHOOTING?
- DEVELOPED IDEAS SINCE THE INITIAL CONCEPT?

good animatic
good location shots
idea development

3.(YOUR ASSESSMENT QUESTION) IS THERE ENOUGH PLANNING?

yes
pretty much
would be better if you included a shot list, will show you thoroughly planned it. - we just realized you do have a shot list, but you could add to it, finish it.
needs detailed shot list, other than that yes.

4.OVERALL ASSESSMENT

IF YOU WERE YO GIVE THIS BLOG A MARKING LEVEL, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

- LEVEL 4: EXCELLENT PLANNING 24-30 MARKS
- LEVEL 3: PROFICIENT PLANNING 17-23 MARKS
- LEVEL 2: ADEQUATE PLANNING 10-16 MARKS
- LEVEL 1: POOR PLANNING 0-9 MARKS

20 marks
21, if finished shot list would show you know exactly what you're doing

Film Shoot 2 The Main Film Shoot

On the 29th of september we were going to originally film at Daves garage but he discovered there were problems with shooting there, our next idea was then to try and film in the college hall which was our second plan, but we then found out this would not be possible because we would only be able to use it for 20 minutes so we went to Plan B. Which was to shoot at my garage (steve's) so we went and filmed there between 3-5 in the afternoon. The shoot went well and we managed to get many of the shots we were looking to get, and we tried out different things as we went along, for example how we would enter the video and how we would exit. We enjoyed the experience and although this was our backup plan it went very well and i think we can be very pleased with what we have achieved in this film shoot.

Here are some photographs of the film shoot and location and also some photos of us.

Our next plan of action will be to begin to edit our footage. We did wonder whether we had enough footage so we could use different angles, but we decided that we can go and shoot in the garage again if we didn't feel happy with the footage we collected.

Film Shoot 1 Photos

Location: Our first film shoot was on the 24th of September. Here are some photos of our shoot.

This is where we shot our shenanigan sequence of pooh sticks. We knew where we wanted to shoot this and so when we arrived we set up and began to film various different shots, from different angles, etc. We used our storyboards to help us do this. Occasionally cyclists and pedestrians came into shot so we waited until it was clear to start shooting again.

Potential ideas for the 3rd shoot

We have been thinking about some ideas for the 3rd shoot, in which we intend to film some more for the 'shenanigans' section of the music video.

We thought of this first idea while we were filming the 'Pooh sticks' section. We saw two rows of trees straight ahead of us, going into the distance
with a path going through the middle. This gave us the idea of what happened in episodes of Scooby Doo, where each member of the gang would chase eachother and then be chased by some kind of monster or ghost, this would happen while they ran through doors and ended up running into eachother. We would do this similarly by running behind the trees, moving gradually closer and closer, until we ended up running past the camera. This idea is quite fun, and it wouldn't have too many problems, except random people walking past, which will complicate things quite alot.

We have been thinking about a second idea aswell, it is quite basic and simple at the moment and we havn't developed it properly yet. We were thinking about one band member wondering about a specific location/ area. Either in Cambridge or around a village, or maybe around the college, this band member would find every other band member in different locations. This would need to be quite upbeat, to fit in with the music.

Problems

We were going to use Davids garage as our filming location, but we then found out it was to small to film in it, so as a group we decided to go and film in the hall at college, but when we said about this to our teacher, she said that if we wanted to film in it, we would need a teacher in there with us, so the maximum filming time we could of had in the hall was only 20 minutes and this was nowhere near enough time to film the footage.

As a group we discussed various other options about where we could film, which wasn't too different from our initial plan/ storyboard.

Some of our other ideas included the media studio, however this would be far too small, and we would struggle to capture most of the shots that we wanted, and not enoguh space to move about in, and there could be problems finding room for each of the four of us in the group. Our second idea was to possibly use one of the music rooms, which would have been perfect, however, we would have had needed permission, and there would have been a high chance that someone else was already using it, and also the music room wasn't what we had intended in our plan. So our final idea was to use Steve's Garage, as he informed us that it had plenty of room, lights and was open.

We then used this as our main filming setting, this went very well as we have now got almost all the footage we need to form a decent music video.

These are the lyrics for our song, we couldn't find them on the internet so I listened to the song over and over, and wrote down the words from the song.

A Momentary Lapse of Reason...

I went to inspect my garage today and made a few startling revelations.

1) It is much smaller than what I had first imagined
2) There is no source of electricity and would be difficult to source out light
3) The small question of moving my dad's motorbike out of shot
4) Light all depends on the weather

I think that it would be much to seek out a new location entirely. One possibility would be the college hall as there is a lot of room, a stage to stage a fake concert and lots of light to use. This change of location has yet to be vetoed by the rest of the group...

Shooting day 1

Yesterday (24th Sept.) we filmed our "pooh sticks" cut away scene. All went according to plan and we managed to film our sequence, along with a few additional shots that we may incorporate into our sequence. We felt if we filmed more scenes that we needed than we would a greater variety to choose from and in turn make the sequence better in the long run. The next sequence we will film is the band performance so that we can begin to edit our footage and prepare a rough cut...

We will use his equipment including electric guitars, bass, drum kit (which we will make out of bin and items we find). We are still deciding how to make the drum kit because Dave doesn't have one. We are going to film on 24th of september during the lesson all of the shenanigans in town. We are also thinking of shooting in another lesson some time.

Camera Allocation - Teacher Post

Make sure you discuss and plan your filming times now. You can start filming next week, assuming you have returned your signed camera loan letter.
Cameras can be used in your usual class blocks (just for that hour and a half), in addition groups can book out either one weekend (Fri 16.10 - Mon 9am) or two overnights during the week (excluding Friday night, for example Tuesday 16.10 to Thursday 9am).
There are around 60 music video groups and nowhere near 60 cameras! Book your camera slot as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Our Animatic

This is our animatic for our music video. We are going to use as this as a guide line for when we begin shooting and is worth noting that the final product may not reflect that of which is seen in the animatic. Ideally, the band performance will be shot in dave's garage and cutaway segments that have been story boarded will be filmed alongside a river, possibly along the cam. When shooting, we will bring the storyboards to ensure that we film the main core of the video as well as possibly filing from various angles that may be included. By doing this, we will have a more variety of shots to choose from. We will all be acting in this video and the cast is as follows:

Harry - Bass
Dave - Drums
Steve - Electric Guitar
Nathan - Vocals and Acoustic Guitar

The next thing we shall do is to continue to storyboard our sequence and discuss days for filming.

TEACHER FEEDBACK

Your blog is looking very good, I am glad to see that you are already responding to the feedback you received in your pitch by researching music videos with a 'spontaneous' feel to them.
Your shot list does need to be more detailed, remember that most music videos change shot after just a few seconds to keep the viewers attention. Ensure you are also considering a range of shot types and angles.
Some evidence of location decisions is also required.
Keep up the good work.

Some of Dave's Influences for the project....

This is the video for "Arnold Layne" by Pink Floyd. It influenced me as it is a very good idea of what I personally would like to achieve in making our music video. The video itself features the whole band fooling around with a mannequin on a beach. This itself is something I would like to focus on, the band as a whole, not relying on the "star power" of the lead singer.

This is the video for "Hello Goodbye" By The Beatles. This is also another good video as it concentrates on the whole band as well as showing the band in humorous scenarios. This video is good seeing as we could try to incorporate some humorous elements to our video.

Thoughts about our pitch

Looking back at our pitch, I feel it could have gone a lot better. We managed to explain our concept to our audience fairly well and answered the majority of the questions asked without struggling. However, some people did mention that the spontaneity (I.E the various cutaway sequences) of our video would have to be planned otherwise it might not work and seem far too random for the video. Not only this but we would also have to plan where to shoot, rather than play on the whole "spur of the moment" theme. We also decided that will have to do some research into videos that we would want to try and make our video seem similar to. With this in mind, for the next few lessons we will be researching videos and storyboard our ideas

The Big Pitch For Media Studies A2 Level By T2-49

NO GREEN SCREEN! IT WILL BE ALL FILMED ON LOCATION! AND NOT THE FRICKIN' GRAND CANYON!

Our concept for this music video is a straight forward performance video with cut away scenes of the band up to various shenanigans. The video will sometimes reflect some lyrics in the song but will only be used for lyrics we feel we can reflect easily in the video. By not having the entire video reflect the lyrics, we feel that we can be much more creative with the video than opposed to doing this. We will also probably try to stay away as much as possible from the conventions of videos seen in the folk-rock genre. Instead we will try to create a a video that will play with conventions seen in indie videos and we hope to try and create something new by doing so.

The target audience we are aiming for with this video will ideally be between the ages of 16-30. Many people's music taste is varied and by having a large target audience, there is a chance that we could appeal to all of the audience. Not only this but based on the music video shown below, the content itself is quite mature and in the long run will mean that there are many creative choices we can make.

For the band performance, we will shoot in a field as well as a garage and cut between the two videos for the duration of the song. There will be various points in the video in which the editing will match the beat of the song E.G for the two, three, four intro in which the person miming will move positions around the area we choose to film first. For the cutaway sequences, we would most likely film in various locations like the college field and some locations around town centre such as outside of a university and possibly a church for our actors taking part in various situations. This video will call for a fair amount of cutaway sequences so it is possible that we may end up filming it as a "spur of the moment" idea. It is very likely that we will be starring in the video rather than getting people from elsewhere to mime in it. This will make it much easier to orchestrate shoots on location and organising group meet-ups to do filming. This in turn will mean that we have more time to film rather than spend half of the time finding out where people are and getting them to the right place.

For props and mise-en-scene we would use various instruments, these being an acoustic guitar, an electric bass guitar, a drum kit (if we can't find one to use we will either borrow one or possibly make one, or not include one at all as the could primarily concentrate on the "star power" of our singer) and a tambourine. We would use the videos we found on youtube as reference points as to what our costumes would look like, which would probably consist of chequered shirts , jeans, ties and maybe a blazer jacket for one of the actors. This closely mirrors the band's appearance in real-life and we wish to appear as the band as closely as possible as to make sure fans of the band know who they are.

Videos of "The Shivers"

This video is of the band live at strawberry fair, we felt that this could be used as a reference point for the look of the band, even if it is to gain an idea of their stage presence and actions.

This is the music video made for the song "Merry-go-Round" by The Shivers. This video gives us a better reference point as to how they might appear in a music video. By watching this, it gives us a clear indication how to dress our actors and what instruments we might require.

Teacher Post - What should your pitch include?

All groups must produce and present a pitch as an integral part of the planning stage. Your pitch is a proposal for your music video to the record company thinking of hiring you:
It must include:

* A clear written summary of the content/key idea for the video (at least 500 words).
The summary should include a reference to performers, locations, props, target audience for the video, reference to research conducted on the band, genre of the band and the song, relationship between the music and the visuals, relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, if the video will conform to or oppose the generic conventions of videos within that genre of music

* 2-4 (embedded) actual music videos which you think are similar to yours or that contain something that has influenced your idea (plus analysis, use Goodwin’s framework for analysing music videos)

* 2 (embedded) student videos which you think are similar (plus analysis)

* 4-6 Images which indicate location choices, overall mise en scene, costumes, props

If there is more than one group pitching for the same song, ensure you have a back-up choice and also try to make your pitch memorable.

Research into the band

The band who preformed the song was "The Shivers". We took to the internet and began our quest to research the band. We established that they were a local band from Cambridge who had recently performed at strawberry fair. We also found that they had a myspace page and that they had 987 friends. They released an album through Itunes and their most popular song was "155CM". We felt that these songs were not up to the standard of "strange ways".

Labels: , , ,

Decision on song

We decided after listening to the 2 songs again, we thought that we should try to make a video for "strange ways".

Ideas for the video

Tractor racing, farmers, characters from various time periods E.G Cavemen Victorians, moving person around field in time with music, improvised musical instruments "natural drum kit", people frantically running around "slapstick style", addressing camera for "you've got some strange ways", shot of person changing into another, fly landing on horse poop

Labels:

Initial Ideas

To begin with we decided to listen to the songs we had been given. However, we decided that we only liked 2 of the songs from the CD. These 2 songs were "strangeways" and "Angels", but we are yet to decide which song to chose as our final one.

We then began to brainstorm upon listening to these 2 songs again. These ideas included:

Strange ways

edit the video in time with the music and edit shots of the band rapidly to certain parts of the song, and the look would be overall be of a country and western influence

Angels

This video would essentially be a short film. Ideas included shots of early morning in a forest, shots of dilapidated buildings with no one around, a sped up shot of footage of the sun moving and an over the shoulder shot of some walking through the streets
